A Blast From the Past
Speelunker Cave was a dark ride attraction that existed in Gold River Adventure's ride building from 1964 to 1991. The ride consisted of various scenes of Speelunkers participating in random activities. Though the ride had no storyline, it was easily a guest favorite. The unique part of the ride were the iconic Speelunker characters themselves. The Speelunkers were exclusive to Six Flags Over Texas and are still talked about regularly today. Six Flags Over Texas has teased Speelunker activity, even posting signage throughout the Gold River Adventure layout. Speelunker fans have gone as far as starting online petitions in an effort to bring the cave back to Six Flags Over Texas.

Flooding & Closure
In 2018, Six Flags Over Texas endured a major flood that destroyed Yosemite Sam & the Gold River Adventure. While the ride’s fate was unknown for quite some time, the park announced the return of the Speelunkers for the 2022 season with the new Pirates of Speelunker Cave attraction.
Ride History
2021
On August 5, Six Flags announced the debut of Pirates of Speelunker Cave for 2022, which will occupy the former layout of Yosemite Sam & the Gold River Adventure.
2018
Yosemite Sam & the Gold River Adventure closes in September due to damage sustained during major flooding.
1991 - 1992
Speelunker Cave is removed and Yosemite Sam & the Gold River Adventure is installed in its place.
